Red Leprechaun is one of the oldest heirloom Red Tinged Romaine varieties dating back to the eighteenth century possibly from the Aegean island of cos where the origin of Romaine (Cos) lettuce is said to be. Interestingly its known to be a semi compact red romaine sharing a name with 'Cimmaron' but the strain we've cultivated for 40 years now is a nearly full size statuesque cultivar! So who knows where this variation began, Plants reach ten inches at maturity and bolt to seed once the heat turns on. the long lapping, oval ,semi crinkled bronze green and pink leaves are sweet and very salad worthy. We"ll plant Red Leprechaun soon in the earliest direct sowings of the season.
