Daucus carota
This is a great cultivar. Bred by John Navazio, plant breeder, friend and author of the wonderfully detailed book on traditional plant breeding "The Organic Seed Grower'.John shared his breeding efforts with us .back in 2007. We put it into our mid summer field sowing and overwintered them under floating row cover. They were apparently pretty tasty to the Canadian geese wintering nearby on Wanaka lake in Lafayette. As the over wintered stecklings began top growth in March , the flock spent a couple days poking through the row cover eating into almost every top! Consequently, the first seed crop was greatly compromised. We've gone on to produce several accessions in large quantities. selecting for a couple of complementary shapes and some variety of flavor. Now, it produces a vigorous crop of purple skinned, uniquely flavored carrots that store exceptionally well. Dragon is a front range adapted variety.
