The amazing and most widely distributed plants on the planet. Divided into 12 subfamilies with 650 Genera and 9,700 species they rank 4th in # species behind the Orchids, Asters, and Fabales. They rank first in global economic importance with their diverse uses as grains, forage pastures, domestic and recreational lawns, bare soil reclamation etc. 

Current issues with gluten intolerance (GI) have diverted a significant part of our population from Wheat and Rye grain products.  A formidable resurgence of cultivation and research of heritage species and varieties  has  begun to spread nation wide . Recent findings now corralate some of the issues concerning the GI epidemic (Celiac Disease) with an imbalance of high gluten protein  to low mineral content found in modern breeds. Where as Heritage races are more digestible and less inflamatory due to their balanced  Gluten Protein to essential Mineral nutritional content. One could compare  this 'intake issue' similarly to the 'uptake' issue with imbalanced soil ammending practices that use higher nitrogen applications to mitigate low mineral uptake. The results are are similar. Plants become overgrown and bloated lacking  stamina and the ability to flower and fruit prolifically. High gluten modern Wheats do the same thing to our intestinal tracts. Traditional and heirloom varieties are making their way back into the food system!
